Gulf pearling tools, diving weights, tayasah and maritime heritage from the Eastern Province.
The Story
“The whole pearling economy hung from a stone and a clip.”
01Origin & making
Eastern Province, Saudi Arabia, 19th century. Made by hand for use, not display — proportion set by the maker's eye and the work of the household it served. Materials: Cotton with zari thread.
02The life of the object
Gulf pearling gear from around 1930, used until the trade collapsed. The rope groove in the weight is worn to a polish, and the clip still carries a wax residue used to keep it from cutting.
03The journey to Arajiz
From a Dammam family whose grandfather dived until 1948. Offered through Eastern Pearl Divers in Qatif. Our specialists examined material, tooling marks and repair history, and a full condition report accompanies the lot.
