The Story
“A licence to teach — the oldest credential in Islamic scholarship.”
01Origin & making
Asir, Saudi Arabia, 18th century. Written on burnished laid paper with reed pen and iron-gall ink, ruled before a single word was set. Materials: Ink and gold on paper.
02The life of the object
Dated 1281 AH and naming a chain of teachers back seven generations. The witnesses signed in four different inks, meaning the scroll was carried between them over weeks.
03The journey to Arajiz
Preserved in a scholar's family library until 2020. Offered through Hijaz Manuscripts in Jeddah. Our specialists examined material, tooling marks and repair history, and a full condition report accompanies the lot.
