The Story
“It cooled the room, and let the household watch the street unseen.”
01Origin & making
Eastern Province, Saudi Arabia, 18th century. Joined without nails where possible, in timber that arrived by sea and was seasoned for years before cutting. Materials: Rosewood and brass.
02The life of the object
Teak lattice from an Al-Balad merchant house, every turning cut on a bow lathe. The interior face is pale; the street face is bleached silver by eighty years of Red Sea sun.
03The journey to Arajiz
Salvaged under a heritage permit during a 2014 restoration. Offered through Hijaz Manuscripts in Jeddah. Our specialists examined material, tooling marks and repair history, and a full condition report accompanies the lot.
