AlUla, Saudi Arabia, Early 20th century. Struck from hand-cut dies on a hammered flan, each strike slightly its own. Materials: Gold and silver alloy.
02The life of the object
Struck at Damascus in AH 92, part of the reform that replaced imperial imagery with pure inscription. It circulated briefly — the high points are barely rubbed — then spent most of its life in a hoard.
